Green Living and Organizing Part 1

I think one would have to be living underneath a rock not to notice all the attention given to the word "green." Seems like every book, magazine, or TV station has something on it about becoming green. I have been green form most of my life (some periods of my life more than others.) Green is really about not being wasteful with your stuff or natural resources and being kind to the earth.

Being green has been around for a long time. People who went through the Great Depression know about being green. I am sure many people can remember either a parent or grandparent talk about not wasting things or re-using them.

Those who grew up during WWII were used to rationing food and gas. They brought their frugal ideas into their lives and children's lives. I know I remember my dad always telling my siblings and me to "...shut the door in the winter, heat is expensive and it is flying out the door-stop wasting it."

Those who grew up in the late 60's and early 70's (including myself) can remember the start of the mainstream environmental movement.  I remember the first Earth days well. I also remember when Ed Begley drove an electric car in Hollywood and was made fun of, and now he has a TV show on HGTV Living with Ed. Things do come full circle. He has many great ideas on recycling and using less . Check out his website www.LivingwithEd.com.

During the 80's and 90's, people were still recycling, but many were wasteful. Buying more and more stuff and throwing out more stuff. Not fixing things that were fixable and tossing them.

Now it seems that we have come full circle circle and everyone is concerned about the environment again, using less and not being wasteful. It is great and hopefully everyone will incorporate some form or level of recycling in their lives. No, you don't have to give up your car or live in a pup tent, but there are many things you can do.

Next time we will discuss green organizing tips.
